The Hiddenite Center will offer a Soap making workshop with heritage artist Tamla Boone on Tuesday, June 24th from 7:00pm until 8:30pm. This fun and creative outdoor workshop will be held at The Hiddenite Center�s Educational Complex (70 Hiddenite Church Road) in the open kitchen cabin area. Cost for participating in the workshop is $10.00 per person. This project is suitable for adults and children; children under 12 are welcome with a supervising adult. Registration is required and may be made by calling (828) 632-6966.

Set among a small village of reconstructed cabins, participants will learn to make lye soap using traditional ingredients once used by early settlers. Fresh herbs from The Hiddenite Center�s adjoining herb garden may be used to create distinctive blends of fragrances.

In addition to learning the process of soap making, participants will learn about the historical significance of this art form. Lye soap, made correctly, can be used as a natural alternative for everything from facial cleansing to laundry.

Tamla Boone, a resident of Cornelius, is an accomplished heritage artist who has been a part of The Hiddenite Center�s Explore North Carolina Heritage fair for a number of years. Tamla also has fifteen years of experience in demonstrating the art of soap making at historic sites throughout North Carolina and Tennessee.
