Victorian Herb Garden Work Day and Planting Party at Lucas Mansion Saturday May 23rd Seeking volun

Public Event

Saturday, May. 23, 2015

The Hiddenite Center is making plans for a Victorian herb garden on the south lawn of the Lucas Mansion just off the historic kitchen. This fan shaped garden will add to the beauty of the grounds, enhancing the experience for visitors to the Center and serving as a valuable teaching tool for those who wish to learn more about how herbs were used in Victorian times and beyond.

The Center will host a volunteer work day on Saturday, May 23, 2015 from 9:00am until noon. Volunteers of all experience levels will be welcomed and appreciated. Participants are asked to bring a shovel, hoe, rake, gloves, and other garden tools to use during the project. Participants may also bring herbs they may wish to share for transplant. This project provides an opportunity for volunteers to contribute to learn how to create a Victorian herb garden while enjoying fellowship and giving back to the community through their support for the Centers garden project.

The Victorian herb garden project will involve removing grass, building a support wall, enhancing soil with amendments, and laying stone/brick paths to separate the individual herbs and more.

Following the planting activities, the Center will host a planting party for the public and for the volunteers who participated in the project. From 1:00pm until 3:00pm on Saturday, May 23rd, the public is invited to visit the newly planted garden and enjoy free refreshments of cookies and iced tea on the porch of the Lucas Mansion. Photographer, Rosa Davis, will be available for those who wish to purchase a Victorian inspired photo shoot. With the Lucas Mansion as the backdrop, Davis will create a special Victorian photo shoot in the gazebo on the south lawn of the mansion. Photo sessions will be available for purchase from the photographer for $20, which will include one 8x10 and two 5x7 prints. An additional sitting fee of $5 will benefit the Center. Participants are welcome to dress in Victorian inspired clothing for this unique photo opportunity.
